A Dietitian applies the art and science of human nutrition to help people understand the relationship between food and health and make dietary choices to attain and maintain health, and to prevent and treat illness and disease.

Safe and competent practice is the key to recognition as a healthcare professional.
Professionalization requires commitment by all healthcare professionals to a Code of Conduct based on ethical values and principles. By being on a register of competent professionals healthcare professionals assure the public, other healthcare colleagues, employers, and Governments that the work they undertake is evidence based, safe and competent.

In Italy competence and activity of Registered Dietitians are regulated by Decree, D.M. 744, 1994.

A national public registered is not yet available and the National Association of Registered Dietitian (ANDID) assumes the role of ‘registration’ of the title of Dietitian for those who have undergone a prescribed programme of studies.
